Why Parents are Losing the Battle Against Head Lice

Why Parents are Losing the Battle Against Head Lice

Many people only visit Lice Clinics of America professional lice treatment centers after trying to handle lice on their own and failing. Some try for a couple of weeks. Some try for a few months. Some try fighting lice for years.

It’s a losing battle primarily because lice have developed a genetic resistance to the chemicals used in the most popular over-the-counter lice products. The chemicals are actually a class of insecticides called pyrethroids. They are neurotoxins that paralyze the central nervous systems of head lice to kill them. Lice resistance to pyrethroids has been studied for more than a decade, and the most recent U.S. study found that 98 percent of lice in 42 states are now resistant to pyrethroids.

Unfortunately, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) still recommends pyrethroids as the first line of defense against head lice. Apparently, the two percent of head lice that might still be killed by the products is reason enough to keep them on store shelves.

Also, OTC lice products don’t kill eggs. This means that even if the insecticides are successful at killing live lice, parents (or someone else) still must manually remove the eggs, also known as nits, by hand or by using a special lice comb. Nits are very difficult to see and to remove, and if you miss one, you’ll have a fresh case of lice on your hands. No wonder the battle against head lice goes on and on and on!

But there are other reasons to avoid the OTC products. First, there are increasing signs that overexposure to pyrethroids can be dangerous for children. One study found a link between pyrethroids and early puberty in boys; and another found a link between pryethroids and attention deficit disorder symptoms in animals.

There’s no need to use products that don’t work or to expose children to dangerous insecticides. Lice Clinics of America has pioneered an entirely new approach to lice eradication that uses no chemicals at all. The company’s AirAllé medical device is clinically proven to kill live lice and more than 99 percent of eggs in about an hour. The AirAllé device has been reviewed and cleared by the FDA and results are guaranteed.

The AirAllé device works by using warm air to dehydrate the lice and eggs. There is no chemical agent. At Lice Clinics of America treatment centers, warm air is applied by certified technicians at the exact temperature, humidity, and location on the scalp to kill lice and eggs.

There are more than 250 Lice Clinics of America treatment centers in more than 20 countries around the world, making it the largest and fastest-growing network of professional lice care facilities in the world. New clinics are opening monthly as the word spreads about a safe, effective, fast way to get rid of head lice.

For those that can’t access a clinic, Lice Clinics of America has also introduced a non-toxic home lice treatment called the Lice Remover Kit. The Lice Remover Kit makes it much safer and easier to treat head lice at home and it’s available at many retailers like Walmart and CVS.
